Does Fogging Oil Really Work?

Does Fogging oil really work?
The short answer is......yes....it really works. When an engine sits idle for a long time, the oil film that normally coats the internal parts eventually drains away, leaving bare metal exposed. Changes in temperature and humidity cause moisture to condense inside the engine, which leads to surface rust on cylinder walls, pistons, and valves.
Fogging oil works by:
-
Creating a Barrier: It is an aerosol lubricant that is much stickier and more "tacky" than regular motor oil.
-
Displacing Moisture: It prevents water molecules in the air from reaching the metal surfaces.
-
Lasting Long-Term: Unlike standard oil, which thin out and drips off, fogging oil clings to the vertical surfaces of the cylinder walls for months.
When Should You Use It?
It is most effective for equipment that has "off-seasons," such as:
-
Marine Engines (Boats): Essential because of the high-moisture environment.
-
Lawn & Garden Gear: Lawnmowers or leaf blowers being stored for winter.
-
Recreational Vehicles: Snowmobiles in the summer or motorcycles in the winter.
Is it necessary for modern cars?
For a car you drive occasionally (once every week or two), it isn't necessary. However, if you are putting a classic car or a project vehicle into deep storage for six months or more, fogging the cylinders can prevent the rings from seizing to the walls—an issue that can cause a "stuck" engine when you try to start it next season.
Can you use WD-40 instead of fogging oil?
Yes, you could use another lubricant such as WD-40, but that product has not been specifically designed to be use used as an engine protector. The best thing to use is Sta-Bil fogging oil because it has the right formula to do the job right.
How to use Sta-Bil fogging oil?
Usage Directions:
- Start engine and remove air filter.
- Spray fogging oil into air intakes of running engine.
- Shut engine off after 10 seconds.
- Remove spark plugs.
- Attach extension tube and spray fogging oil into each cylinder for 3 seconds.
- Replace spark plugs.
How long does fogging oil take to burn off?
When you start the engine again next season, it will produce a thick cloud of white smoke for a minute or two as the oil burns off. This is completely normal and means the product did its job!
